Atelier for Early Music 2012

From 2nd until 7th October 2012
"Potsdam - Music at the court of Frederick the Great"

The Atelier for Early Music 2012 will deal with the music written at the court of Frederic the Great (1712-1786), King of Prussia in Potsdam. The absolutistic ruler and proponent of enlightened absolutism, was not only a military genius and reformer of bureaucracy and civil service, but also a philosopher, author, historian, patroniser of the arts, and last but not least a virtuoso flute player and composer.

Over the years Frederick invited excellent musicians and composers to his court in Potsdam. Apart from Quantz and C.Ph.E. Bach, Graun was installed as opera composer and ‘Kapellmeister’ and the two brothers Franz and Johann Georg Benda leaded the court orchestra. By 1750 the Court Music consisted of about fifty renowned and extremely well paid instrumentalists and singers.

The emphasis of this year’s course will be the compositional output of the musicians at the Prussian court in the 18th century, their predecessors and their successors. Not only the compositions themselves and their style, but also the many theoretical sources of this time had great influence on the following generations and are essential in historical informed performance practice today. Solo-repertoire, chamber music, concerts and lectures will bring this fantastic era alive.
